KUGB Syllabus

York Elite Karate Club is affiliated to the KUGB and all gradings are conducted by KUGB examiners according to the KUGB rules.

The latest grading syllabus can be found on the KUGB website under Documents, KUGB Technical Rules, Grading Syllabus and Rules. The current version is also available in pdf format: KUGB-Grading-Rules-Syllabus-2014.pdf

Learning Resources

There are a many useful resources on the web, here are a few:

  • The KUGB YouTube site has a range of videos of competitions, training and demonstrations that may be of interest

  • The Shotokan Sensei YouTube site has videos that talk through basic techniques and many kata

  • In this YouTube playlist 26 Shotokan Kata are demonstrated by Hirokazu Kanazawa

  • Sensei Paul James (KUGB) Youtube playlist performing the Heian series, Tekki SHodan and Bassai Dai, all you need to get to black belt.

  • For beginners the first kata you learn is called "Kihon Kata" (also known as "Taikyoku Shodan"), some videos and other useful information can be found below:

    • You can find a pictorial view at  the LSKC web site 

  • How to tie your belt. There are many ways but this video on YouTube is a good starting point.

There are many books on Karate which may be of interest, here are a few:

  • The KUGB Guide to Better Karate,  Bob Poynton, Caesar Andrews, Gary Day-Ellison

  • The Shotokan Karate Bible, Beginner to Black Belt, Ashley P. Martin
